After a series of unavoidable hold-ups, not least the wild, wet and wintry weather at the start of the year, work has finally begun on the upgrade of the large junction near Kingussie Railway Station.

Kingussie Community Development Company and The Highland Council confirm that the proposed improvements to the Spey Street Junction project which were due to start in January are now under way.

Workmen moved in yesterday to tape off areas where the project would be taking place first.

A spokesperson for Kingussie and Vicinity Community Council explained:

"The closure is being imposed to allow Highland Council Active Travel improvements to the junction indicated in yellow in the plan. The extent of the closure of Spey Street is indicated in orange.

"The works are planned to continue into May; there will be temporary traffic lights on the B970 Ruthven Road to allow access while the works are in progress.

"Diversions will be sign posted."

The project, born from a Cycle Friendly Kingussie initiative in 2019, will see safer routes with pavements from the High School and the station into the town.

The rejuvenated Gynack Gardens, now a stunning focal point for social events such as Sunday Markets and even a visit from a travelling Gilbert & Sullivan company, provide the main attractive route into the town, with a new entrance at the south end.

The gardens are also home to the Badenoch capital's war memorial and a new memorial stone to Force K6's Indian Regiment heroes.
