An Aviemore-based funeral company has been given the go-ahead to expand operations into Kingussie.

Jamie R Rodgers Funeral Directors has been granted planning permission for the change of use of buildings to create a mortuary, meeting room, office space and workshop in the town centre.

The site is the former mortuary and public toilets situated to the rear of High Street and King Street.

Mr Rodgers said: "I’m looking forward to forging ahead with works to the new premises in 2024 and being able to offer those living in Kingussie, Newtonmore and the surrounding areas a space that allows people to visit loved ones in a comfortable, intimate and sympathetic setting.

"I’ll continue to invest in my business to give clients the best possible service at their time of need.

"It’s great being able to update and resurrect a building that served a similar purpose back in the day.

"I’ll keep locals updated on progress, and look forward to inviting people to the opening when it happens.

"Thank you to everyone for their continued support.

Highland Council planning officer Jennifer Mair stated in her approval: "The proposals are for the change of use of two existing redundant buildings to the rear of Kingussie High Street to form a funeral directors office and mortuary.

"The proposal will utilise much of the existing buildings with the main alterations being to the roofs.

"A funeral directors office and associated mortuary is considered to be an acceptable use in a town centre location.

"Only one parking space is provided for within the site, however, on-street public parking is available on both High Street and King Street."

Both buildings will be re-roofed with corrugated galvanised sheeting, the windows in the former mortuary building will be replaced within the existing openings and the building will be repainted.

The site is accessed via a lane from King Street.

Jamie R Rodgers Funeral Directors already has premises on the Dalfaber Industrial Estate in Aviemore.
