A former professional footballer in Australia, Toto Vastano had no sooner returned to the family home in Badenoch when he was preparing to 'set sail' once more.

The weekend saw him launch himself on a 700-mile epic around the southern half of Scotland.

“I’m not mad,” the 25-year-old assured the Strathy. “It’s all for a good cause and I’m going with a real expert.”

Toto, son of Toni and Ann Vastano who are now based at Kincraig’s Old Post Cafe and Gallery (and studio) set out yesterday (Saturday) on schedule for a two or three week paddle against the elements and the tides.

“We'll be wild camping on the beaches we land at on each leg," he said.

“The route will take us from the fishing village of Pittenweem in Fife and pass Edinburgh in the Firth of Forth, take in the Forth & Clyde canal past Glasgow into the Clyde and then round the Mull of Kintyre, Arran, Jura, Mull, Fort William and into the Caledonian Canal and Loch Ness – before returning to the North Sea at Inverness passing Aberdeen, Dundee and St Andrews.”

He explained: “I’m raising money in aid of Birchwood Highland, a metal health charity based here in the Highlands which is close to my heart.

“I have always craved adventure since I was young, and have always pushed myself to take challenges despite carrying around a certain weight of doubt in my potential, which stems from having experienced periods of depression in my life.

“The amazing work they do at Birchwood Highland is something which I can really relate to.”

He was invited to join the expedition by great friend Jack Gatacre, a well-seasoned kayaker who has been making meticulous plans for the challenge.”

Strathy readers can help him raise money via his Instagram page @Antonio_vastano_expeditions, which will also link with his “gofundme” page.

“It was created to help raise awareness for mental health and allow people to follow me on the adventure through the highs and lows,” he said. “While also giving an idea of the type of training I am doing to prepare for this trip both mentally and physically.”

The pair have already raised their first £1000 but will gladly accept lots more.

He pointed out that all the donations which come in will be eligible for Gift Aid.
