Hillwalkers and climbers are being warned to be on their guard following heavy rock fall in a popular point in the Cairngorms.

Large boulders have crashed down from the Shelter Stone crag in recent days.

The Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team has told visitors to exercise caution in the area after picking up on social media posts.

A team spokesperson said: "There were no call outs to this area so no one involved we hope.

"This could possibly be the large loose block at the end of the 'Crack for Thin Fingers' pitch now departed.

"Nevertheless, the loose rock on ledges is now a hazard on lower slabs.

"Please take care on approach and routes until more information appears."

RSPB mountain ranger Dave Cullen shed more light yesterday on the incident.

He posted: "I was descending down the path towards Shelter Stone when that went off yesterday. The boulders went a long way down and fairly close to the Shelter Stone.

"I watched the pair climbing on the adjacent face to make sure they were fine. They had their abseil rope still in place from the top and they were both moving and looked to be okay.

"It was rather loud and would have been very disconcerting to be climbing next to that."
