A hiker was rescued yesterday in the Cairngorms after being battered by fierce gales.

The woman, who was in her 20s, was blown over by winds gusting to around 50mph.

Rescuers had to cross rivers swollen by the recent thaw in the three hour operation.

The woman took shelter in her tent and phoned for help. She also used the what3words app to guide members of Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team to her location.

The alarm was raised at around 3.30pm yesterday and six members of Cairngorm MRT went to her aid.

"She was very cold and wet about 500 metres high up in Glen Einich," said a spokesman for the team.

"The rivers were swollen by the recent rain and ice melt and it was tricky driving our Landrover across them.

"She had used what3words and we found her and took her back to base. She was well equipped.

"The conditions are very changeable at the moment with colder weather this weekend and snow due next week – so people have to be prepared and check the forecasts."
