RECKLESS motorists were caught doing almost 100mph during a police crackdown at the weekend.

Road policing officers and safety camera staff took to numerous Highland roads between Friday and Sunday as part of the clampdown aimed at targetting dangerous speeding.

And a total of 25 offenders were collared over the weekend, with one caught doing 97mph on a 60mph stretch of the A832 near Achnasheen, and others caught doing almost 90mph on the A9 near Helmsdale.

The worst offenders included one driver who was detected travelling at 95mph within a 70mph on the A9 near to Tore, two drivers caught doing 97mph and 91mph near Achnasheen, and three drivers spotted travelling at 89mph, 89mph and 83mph within a 60mph speed limit near Helmsdale.

Police Sergeant Calum MacAulay, of the Road Policing Unit, said: “Travelling above the speed limit allows each driver less time to react to hazards that appear on the road. That includes on roads which drivers know well.

“A crash involving speed affects more than just you and your car – it also impacts your family, the victim’s family, the emergency services and those who witness it.”
