Primary schools across the area covered by Highland Council will be hit by strike action in the New Year.

Nicky Grant, the council's chief officer for education and learning, has informed parents by letter.

The action is due to take place on Tuesday, January 10, and has been called by the Educational Institute of Scotland as part of a national dispute regarding pay.

In her letter Ms Grant said: "The safe supervision of children and young people is of the utmost importance and, given that we anticipate a significantly reduced number of both management and teaching staff in schools and early learning and childcare settings, a decision has been made to close all primary schools to pupils."

She also apologised to parents for any inconvenience the move will cause.
