The first fundraiser by a group behind plans to give children in Aviemore a local play park to be proud of is taking place tomorrow.

Parents recently launched their campaign to give Burnside play park – in the middle of one of the village's biggest residential areas – a major overhaul.

As part of that they have started raising a community share of the money – and it all gets under way tomorrow with a Christmas family fun day starting at 2pm at the Royal British Legion in Aviemore.

One of the event organisers, Katy Davies, said: "It’s our first fundraiser and we will have hot food, home baking, children’s games and a Christmas family quiz as well as raffles and toy shop."

Giving an update on the campaign since its launch, she said: "We have had all our playground contractors come and view the site and looking forward to having some designs in the new year and asking the children at the school to choose.

"We are then looking at applying for all suitable funding and really going forward.

"We are really hoping the community will get behind our project and swing into action."

The Highland Council maintained facility at Burnside has seen much better days and pieces of play equipment have gradually disappeared over the past two decades.

The campaign was launched last month to raise a sum in the region of £100,000 with the local authority already committing £30,000.
