The man behind the local Saving Wildcats crowdfunder is celebrating a roaring start to the campaign.

Peter Macnab and his friend Piotr Peretko were out walking on the Dava Way when they came across a wildcat kitten freezing in the snow.

Their desperate bid to save the animal was sadly unsuccessful as 'Huntleigh' ultimately yielded to pneumonia. It's not known how long the kitten had been abandoned in the snow.

But at the weekend Peter decided to set up a crowdfunder to raise £1000 towards the preservation of other members of the highly endangered species, now said in its purest form to number just 300 in the whole world.

Within hours the target had been smashed and it wasn't long before it had been doubled.

The decision was taken to keep the fundraiser going for a fortnight.

Yesterday Peter was celebrating passing the £4000 mark within the first 72 hours of the charity effort.

"It's an unbelievable result," he said, "day three raising £2141.00!

"The Royal Zoological Society Scotland contacted me today to say that they broke the 1k mark with donations over the weekend off the back of people reading our story - this is massive result even for these guys - they have kindly added this to our pot!

"With everyone's help we have sent our story viral, and hopefully raised awareness of the plight our little furry friends are in! Let's keep it going - every like and share helps! Thanks so much for reading. SAVE OUR HIGHLAND TIGERS!"
