Grantown Grammar School has launched its own appeals to help those caught up in the unfolding tragedy.

Grantown Grammar School is rallying round to do its bit for Ukraine with some of its pupils originally from Eastern Europe directly affected by the unfolding tragedy in the war-torn country.

Pupils at the high school will be wearing the Ukrainian national flag colours of yellow and blue in return for donations to the Red Cross, and there will also be a collection of items to be sent to help refugees who have fled to Poland.

Headteacher Claire McGonigal told the Strathy: "We have a number of pupils from Eastern Europe who are extremely anxious about friends and relatives in Ukraine and the whole community wanted to help.

"We are therefore holding a 'wear it yellow and blue' day tomorrow with donations being collected for the Red Cross.

"We're also coordinating the collection of toiletries, nappies and sanitary pads to go to refugees in Poland.

"I'll be taking a delivery to Touch of Poland in Inverness tomorrow.

"This will continue while the crisis continues and I'll update the community as to which items are needed each week."

Mrs McGonigal continued: "The situation in Ukraine is shocking and terrible. Pupils are watching Tik Tok videos which young people their age are posting of soldiers on the street and from air raid shelters.

"We all have so many questions and few answers. In addition to showing pupils a PowerPoint about the current situation, we've also given pupils advice on how to many their anxiety about the war and who they can talk to.

"Raising money for the Red Cross and collecting donations for refugees is a way of showing our support and solidarity for those Ukrainians who are suffering so much."
