A housing company director tried to avoid police who had caught him in a speed trap travelling in his performance car at 110mph.

Joshua Horton was clocked at the high speed on the A95 near Grantown on March 14, last year.

But when officers decided to stop him, Inverness Sheriff Court heard earlier today their unmarked car had to travel at over 100mph to catch up with his BMW M3.

Fiscal depute Naomi Duffy-Welsh said the police saw 34 year old father of three Horton negotiate the roundabout outside the town and then turn into Kylintra Crescent where he lived.

A young teenager was in the car with him.

She said: "He exited his vehicle and ran towards his home, jumping a wall before going into the house. Police knocked at the door and were told he was not there."

Ms Duffy-Welsh added that officers returned to his house some time later and he was charged.

Defence solicitor Natalie Paterson said her client was a director of Horton Homes and employed seven people.

"His actions were extremely foolish and he panicked." Ms Paterson added.

Horton admitted driving carelessly and at excessive speed as well as failing to provide details of who was driving the car.

Fining Horton £975 and banned him from driving for a year, Sheriff Sara Matheson told Horton: "Travelling at 110mph albeit in a car built to drive at that speed was unconscionable driving, especially with a young person in the car.

"I hope you have taken a hard look at yourself."
