“Yes, this is the one,” Glenfeshie laird Anders Holch Povlsen told the Strathy after receiving the most satisfying accolade yet for the country’s most ambitious 200-year forestry regeneration project.

The country’s largest private landowner, with estates across the north covering well over 250000 acres, explained: “We have worked on this for more than 15 years and it’s been hard work by every team member to get here.”

The conservation company formed by the Polvsens, Aviemore-based Wildland Ltd., won Nature Scotland’s prestigious Forest and Woodland Award on Friday.

The Danish billionaire said: “We have seen lots of skilled deer management and commitment every day, to deliver a habitat and landscape in positive recovery.

“Collecting data and evidence to support our actions on the ground has been vital too, to learn as much as possible for sharing future guidance and knowledge with others.

“Full credit and respect to our stalkers, who manage a sustainable deer stalking department while delivering on their conservation ambitions and targets as well.

“And a very special thanks to Thomas (MacDonell, director of conservation) as a lot of it has been his vision and his determination – and he has had to put up with a lot to deliver this result. Lots of work remains ahead of us, but the future looks brighter and more beautiful for the glen than ever.”

Hosted online by TV presenter Arlene Stuart, the 10th Nature of Scotland Awards celebrated the best of Scottish nature. The judges said: “The 15-year transformation of Glen Feshie - from over-grazed pinewood to Scotland’s most exciting and celebrated forest recovery project, is a profound and spectacular demonstration of restoration potential.

“It is testament to the commitment of the Wildland Ltd team, and the drive and determination of visionary owner, Anders Holch Povlsen.”
