A gigabit-capable broadband network that will support homes and businesses across Strathspey is a step closer to reality.

The collaboration of companies behind the StrathspeyNow – network have dedicated more than two years to the project.

Despite many set-backs through the pandemic and since, they have been given the go ahead to instal key equipment that will enable their network to connect the initiative’s first homes.

Simon Baldwin of Destination Digital – the leading company on StrathspeyNow – said: “Our fibre connection is live and has been tested. We are installing key equipment that will enable us to relay our offering wirelessly as planned. It is a very exciting step forward in this unique project.”

Homeowners who triggered the project by registering for the Broadband Voucher Scheme will now receive letters from StrathspeyNow’s internet service provider, TransmitAir.

Mr Baldwin: “If that is you, please don’t ignore it. Those who requested our support through the voucher scheme must respond to TransmitAir and agree to be connected.”

Beyond that stage – and it will be a ‘matter of weeks’ – the network’s offering will be shared with all who have registered their interest to date.

Mr Baldwin explained: “Those who we can connect and who choose to sign-up can then become part of this new community-supporting network.”

StrathspeyNow will use state-of-the-art technology to identify properties their network can reach.

Mr Baldwin said: “Grantown has already been mapped and more communities are now being assessed. Information on that process will be published soon through StrathspeyNow’s own channels.

Richard Watson, of Rapier Systems – one of the partners in the StrathspeyNow project, has praised the contribution made by community leaders in the town.

He said: “Without the Grantown Society's drive and enthusiasm, we would not have reached this milestone. We would also like to thank the Grant Arms for their help in enabling us to launch our network.”
