FIREFIGHTERS from across the Highlands and Moray were in attendance at a wildfire near Daviot this afternoon.

The fire, which is believed to be in among woods and moorland not far from the A9, was reported at around 2.45pm.

Six appliances were in attendance at the time of writing. As well as one from Inverness, there were also fire engines from Nairn, Forres, Beauly, Invergordon and Dornoch.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said the blaze was not far from the Auchnahillin Holiday Park, which sits on the B9154 to the east of the A9.

Police have urged people to keep their windows and doors closed.

A police spokesman said: "Emergency services are currently in attendance at a wildfire in the Daviot area south of Inverness.

"The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service are currently dealing with the fire and we would ask local residents to keep windows and doors closed due to smoke."

No further details were immediately available.

The fire comes amid a long-running dry spell, which has sparked water level concerns in Highland rivers, and also led to numerous wildfires – including one near Cannich a fortnight ago that was so big it could be seen from space.

It is unclear what caused this latest conflagration, but the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has been urging people to take extra care in the countryside, urging the public not to use naked flames given the tinder-dry nature of the vegetation.

Despite this, there was a row overnight after webcam footage showed numerous campfires dotted around the shores of Loch Morlich in the Cairngorms.
