Observers are concerned for the fate of a young swan which has been frozen in thick ice in a quiet corner of Loch Insh at Kincraig.

Villager Wendy Welding posted today: "Just to make local dog walkers aware.

"There is a juvenile swan stuck in the ice on Loch Insh.

"It’s been there now 3 days.

"RSPB and SSPCA have been notified."

Her husband Mike told the Strathy: "It really looks as if the swan can't move from there. It's not far from the shore at Dunachton and we can see that some other people have tried to free it by throwing the occasional stone onto the ice, but clearly it's not shifted and nobody wants to hurt the bird, so it's difficult."

Brutal frosts have hit the strath over the last few days and any temperature rise today has only been minimal.

An update on the swan's fate later.
