Endurance cyclist Matt Page has had to call a halt to his attempt to set a new record for the North Coast 500 tourism route.

A message flashed up on the 38-year-old’s live tracker stating: "Unfortunately Matt has had to stop his record attempt.”

It is not yet known why the challenge came to an end but Mr Page's tracker had halted north of Berriedale and remained static for some time.

The ultra cyclist set off from Inverness Castle at 6am yesterday and followed the NC500 in a clockwise direction. He had completed the major part of the 516-mile route and was within hours of the finish line.

According to his tracker his time on the road was 21 hours, five minutes.

He had been hoping to better the record time set last year by Mark Beaumont, who completed the 516-mile route in a blistering 28 hours, 35 minutes.
