In my last article, I wrote about the importance of our renewables sector to our economy and to achieving Net Zero and the vital role our communities play in working towards that ambition.

This point was brought into sharper focus by the recent decision by Sir Keir Starmer to backpedal on a crucial £28 billion investment in renewable energy. That he chose to join the Prime Minister in this decision is not just disappointing; it’s a deeply harmful move that threatens jobs, investment, and economic growth across Scotland.

Reducing investment in renewable energy now is the worst possible decision at the worst possible time.

Scotland can be a global leader in renewable energy with the Highlands and Islands front and centre, yet this potential is undercut by short-sighted policies at Westminster.

The situation is made even more critical when considering the exorbitant cost overruns at Hinkley Point C.

These costs highlight the unsustainable nature of continuing down the path of nuclear energy and underscore the urgent need for a shift towards more sustainable, renewable energy sources.

These are impactful decisions made by the Prime Minister and the man seeking his office.

We already know that the increased costs at Hinkley Point C will hit consumers in their pockets for years to come—the case for renewables about environmental sustainability and economic sense.

The EU and the US are accelerating their investments in green energy, recognising the economic opportunities it presents.

Yet, in the UK, we’re stepping back from an industry that could drive significant economic growth and job creation, especially in regions like ours.

Major investment in renewable energy is crucial for Scotland to achieve its full potential in this green energy revolution.

That’s why my SNP colleagues and I are calling for a significant increase in investment to drive growth, innovate, and lead in this critical sector.

Labour joining the Tories in a shift away from renewable energy investment is worrying, and our response must be relentless and unwavering to secure a prosperous, sustainable future for Scotland and the Highlands and Islands.

• Back here at home, my team and I continue to help individuals and families throughout the constituency struggling to make ends meet or face other challenges.

As your MP, my priority is to ensure I’m as accessible as possible and that you get the help you need.

That’s why I always want to remind you that we are here to help you and your family when needed.

You may recall that after seeking feedback from constituents last year on making contact even easier, we moved to a more accessible meeting format, moving away from traditional MP surgeries.

This change means you can now schedule appointments at times and locations that suit you best or opt for quick calls instead of attending set surgeries at times that might not be convenient for you.

This shift has received overwhelmingly positive feedback, for which I’m truly grateful.

That said, I love nothing better than being out chatting to folk and I continue to conduct regular door-to-door surgeries and look forward to the brighter weather to get out and about even more.

If you need my help or advice, you can book a call or meeting at www.drewhendrymp.scot or call my office on 01463 611 024.
