EVACUEES who were forced to leave their homes as a result of a large wildfire south of Inverness have been urged not to return to their properties yet.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, and the police, both issued pleas earlier today for residents affected by evacuations not to return as of yet.

This plea was still in effect at the time of writing, shortly after 2pm.

Earlier today the fire service had confirmed that the fire, which broke out near Daviot at around 2.45pm on Saturday and has reportedly burned an area a mile across, was now under control.

However, four appliances were still tackling the blaze this morning – as well as resources from a number of other agencies such as Forest and Land Scotland – and it has not yet been extinguished.

Emergency crews will be hoping that forecast heavy rain showers this afternoon will help in their fight to quell the fire.

Meanwhile, they have urged people to stay away and also to keep windows and doors closed to protect themselves from the smoke.

A spokesman said: "Emergency services remain in attendance at a wildfire in Daviot near Inverness.

"Evacuated residents are asked not to return to their homes, and people in the local area should keep their windows closed to prevent smoke inhalation."
