There’s a new team in Badenoch and Strathspey and it’s a winner.

Kingussie’s shinty club has paired up with the Badenoch and Strathspey Access Panel to produce the perfect result: facilities which everyone can enjoy.

Jim Campbell, chairman of the Access Panel, told the Strathy: “Some time ago we were contacted by John Dougherty, building standards ifficer at Highland Council, asking us to liaise with Kingussie Camanachd Club who wanted to ensure that their new pavilion at the Dell complied with the requirements of the Equality Act.

“Our access auditors, accordingly, met Russell Jones and John Robertson on site and made some recommendations which were agreed on..

“About a week ago, our auditors met John again and were pleased to note that all the suggestions had been acted upon. The results should mean that now anybody with mobility problems should be able to access the upper level of the pavilion by a gentle ramp, find a space for a wheelchair, have use of a toilet fully fitted for a disabled person, with a sliding door and have access to the team changing room for a chat. if appropriate.

“It is to the credit of the club that they have given consideration to the needs of less-advantaged members of the community, including their veterans who still wish to support their team in spite of being no longer fit to play themselves.”

ALL MOD CONS: The handrail was specially designed to be adaptable for all.

Club president John Robertson was only too delighted with the new ‘team’. He said “That is nice of the BASAP to comment. Yes, we have been working with them to make sure we meet their recommendations for disability access.”
