The laird of Glenfeshie has explained why Danish professional footballers have just been put through hell on his estate.

The majority shareholder of FC Midtjylland told the Strathy earlier this week that it was all about bonding between the players.

“I’m not a football man, or have any football skills, but this is our local club, and over the last 25 years many good people have managed to build a great one, with a strong foundation and not least a deep social integration into the wider region.

“My humble ambition is to continue to support this journey and pride for the region, hopefully so that FCM will play regularly in Europe competitions.

“Which player is selected doesn’t interest me. What does is how we can create a stronger and more sustainable business, and ensure some of the best talents become a part of the club.

“We want to see a striving social enterprise.”

The retail clothing billionaire, now the largest private landowner in Scotland, offered his Badenoch mountains as an alternative training camp for three wintry days to ensure ‘an even closer and a fully united team, with the right spirit and willingness to support and fight for each other’.

According to the club’s own YouTube video it all did its job, with the players roughing it and even shooting their own dinner after going hungry for some 24 hours.

“It was a huge success,” said Mr Povlsen. “Thanks to the preparation and support from all our Wildlanders. They all deserve the credit.”

The Strathy asked if he had started something which could become a regular workout for the club: “Maybe there is more to come for this kind of a true WildLand experience!”

The players were equipped with only ‘very cheap sleeping bags’ in temperatures as low as -21C, the experience documented on their YouTube channel and Danish television.

FC Midtjylland are currently top of the Danish Superliga and have played in the UEFA Europa League on a regular basis for the past decade.
