A popular Aviemore food, drink, arts and crafts festival launched last autumn has been cancelled for 2020 as a result of the Covid-19 crisis.

The Aviemore Big Mix Festival was scheduled to take place again this year building on the success of last September’s week-long programme.

It brought together some of the very finest strath producers, performers and artists for a series of events at local venues including whisky and gin tastings, live music, food and other offerings.

Festival manager Susan Libeks, who works with Speyside Distillery, one of the event’s main partners, stressed it was hoped the event would be relaunched in 2021.

She said: “It is with great sadness and regret that we let you know of the cancellation of the Aviemore Big Mix Festival 2020.

“It has been a difficult decision, especially as we see all the work in building the new stage for the village green in Aviemore which we had so looked forward to celebrating.

“As we are all taking small steps to open up facilities, maintaining social distancing remains paramount and a festival space as small as the one we have would make it impractical to manage.

“We do intend to relaunch the Festival in September 2021 and we hope that you will look forward to it too.”

There was better news from Kingussie-based Speyside Distillers on its Aviemore retail park shop, The Snug, which has re-opened.

A spokesperson said: “We are following Covid protocol with numbers in the shop at any one time and are limiting the hours to five afternoons a week, Wednesdays to Sundays.

“We cannot offer tasting sessions until later in July.”
