GREEN Highland councillors have put down a motion today asking to consider providing free bus passes for a year for all refugees moving into the Highlands.

The motion, proposed by councillor Ryan MacKintosh and seconded by councillor Andrew Baldrey, asks for the scheme to be backdated to March 2022 to include all Ukranian refugees to the region.

Councillor MacKintosh said: “We need to do something positive to help and support our Ukranian guests. Refugees can have no resources, so a one-year bus pass will allow them to see round our beautiful Highlands, as well as looking for jobs, attending appointments etc.

“Our motion instructs the relevant officers to investigate the costs and feasibility of the scheme and report back to Council for a final decision.

“Council recently gave President Vladimir Zelensky Freedom of the City of Inverness. This practical support gives Ukranian refugees freedom of the Highlands."

Dr Arun Sharma from Highlands for Ukraine said: “Refugees need support for getting to English classes, shops and various appointments. Many are in rural locations and bus fares are expensive and can lead to them getting isolated.

“The need is greatest in the first few months when they first arrive from a war torn country, as they don't receive any universal credit for at least 5 weeks after applying. Most other Scottish councils are providing free bus travel for newly arrived displaced people.”
