Controversial Newtonmore lane barriers removed after latest incident
Highland Council have given up on having metal barriers in Newtonmore's controversial Curleys Lane.
Local commentators told the Strathy that officials had for some time been "frustrated by the amount of time they are having to spend on this issue."
The village's community council have now been informed officially that the authority "have a sign on order which will be placed within the lane advising that the junction is unsuitable for HGVs.
"As well as this, they will be placing an additional 20mph sign in the lane."
The confirmation follows another incident this week which saw one commercial vehicle trapped by the metal barriers placed in the lane.
A crane had to be ordered to deal with the freeing and removal of the Tesco van.
Social media commentators locally agreed "Lucky it was not an ambulance!"
Another observer pointed out: "In the last few days before this happened you can see the marks on the ground where the barrier had been moved in about a foot to make the passage even narrower."
Today a spokesperson for The Highland Council told the Strathy: "The barriers and cones have been continually moved and defaced by an unknown person, using grease.
"The moving of the barriers has caused this to happen.
"It has taken up a great deal of local officer time.
"The barriers and cones have been removed this morning and won’t be replaced."
