The planning committee of the Cairngorms National Park Authority has a new convener at the helm.

Councillor Chris Beattie – the recently arrived Angus Council representative on the CNPA board – has taken over the role following the departure of Dr Gaener Rodger.

He was nominated by Sandy Bremner and seconded by Derek Ross and then took charge of his first planning meeting earlier today at the authority’s Grantown headquarters.

Councillor Beattie took 10 votes while fellow nominee Geva Blackett gained seven votes in the ballot. She was nominated by Paul Gibb and seconded by Russell Jones.

He said after his election: “I would like to thank my fellow committee members for their support.

“I look forward to steering the CNPA’s planning committee through the challenges of trying to balance the protection of the park’s important habitats and landscapes with the need to ensure that there are opportunities for people to live and work here.”

A CNPA spokeswoman said the vote had been conducted between November 21 and 23 by electronic ballot as there was more than one candidate.
