Plans for what could prove to be a test case for battery energy storage facilities being located in the Cairngorms National Park have been called in by the authority’s planners.
Whirlwind Energy Storage is behind the proposal for the 49 megawatts facility on land 380 metres west of East Croftmore Farm by Boat of Garten.
The call-in means that the CNPA’s planning committee will determine the application.
The proposed development is intended to accommodate up to 50 battery storage units housed within containers along with ancillary structures at the site one kilometre north-east of the village.
The technology is expected to become commonplace in the UK over the next decade and means the renewable energy projects including wind farms can become more efficient.
Power can be released from the facilities to the Grid at times of greater demand from households. This is one of the first applications of its kind for Scotland although the technology is already in use in other countries including the United States.
A CNPA spokesperson said: “The CNPA can confirm it has called in the planning application for a battery storage facility by Boat of Garten, given the nature and scale of the proposed development.
“We expect it to come before planning committee within the next few months and therefore cannot comment on the detail.”
