British Airways has announced it will be cutting the number of flights between Inverness Airport and London Heathrow over the summer.

The carrier said it will be merging some of its low occupancy flights to help it through a challenging period.

Inverness Airport general manager Graeme Bell, said: “This appears to be a temporary adjustment to the schedule and is an operational decision by BA.

"Although we have been generally pleased that the aviation sector has re-emerged quite strongly from the pandemic there remain challenges for airlines as demand for travel has picked up.

“The Heathrow-Inverness link remains a popular route and we are hopeful BA will reinstate the 7am Heathrow flight as soon as it is feasible to do so."

The route is seen as a crucial link for the business community and for onwards travel to many more destinations across the world not served by other hub airports in the UK.

A BA spokesman said: "We've taken the decision to reduce our schedule by merging some low occupancy flights and flights to destinations with multiple services each day and using larger aircraft, giving customers the maximum flexibility to either rebook with us or another airline as close to their original departure time as possible, or to receive a full refund."

BA restored its flights between the Highland capital and Heathrow in 2016 after a 20 year hiatus and following a long running campaign by the region's business leaders.
