Badenoch timber specialists Russwood have invested in an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) which has been installed on the exterior of their Newtonmore office building.

AED’s are portable devices which are used to assist those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. The sophisticated, yet easy-to-use, medical device can analyse the heart’s rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electric shock to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm. The defibrillators give audio commands, meaning they can be used by anyone.

It is hoped that the new defibrillator, which will be routinely checked and maintained by Russwood, will become an asset for the local community.

The 33-year-old company’s offices are located in a busy industrial estate, directly adjacent to Newtonmore Railway Station.

The inspiration behind the defibrillator came from managing director John Russell’s shinty connection with Ross Cowie of Skye Camanachd.

Ross suffered a heart attack watching a shinty match which, by good luck, was also being watched by an ambulance crew who were able to use the lifesaving equipment in the possession.

As a result of his experience, Ross was inspired to start Lucky2BHere. The registered charity, which is entirely volunteer run, aims to empower communities to manage life threatening incidents. Lucky2BHere has now installed 650 defibrillators and counting to communities throughout Scotland.

Ian Jones, of Outwardly Mobile First Aid, has been instrumental in assisting with the installation of the new defibrillator.

Mr Russell told the Strathy: “We thought our office building was the perfect location for siting a defibrillator.

“It means our staff, the other companies and delivery drivers on the industrial estate now have fast access to this piece of life-saving equipment.”

Mr Jones said: “Outwardly Mobile First Aid includes the use of defibrillators in all our courses to ensure that our clients are confident in their use. I look forward to working with Russwood staff to give them the skills to use the defibrillator should the need arise.

“The availability of this defibrillator is a great asset to the Newtonmore community.”
