Local MP Drew Hendry was suspended from the House of Commons after his dramatic attempt to scupper the UK Internal Market Bill by removing the mace, without which MPs can pass no laws.

Mr Hendry (SNP) was dubbed 'very childish' by Deputy Speaker Dame Rosie Winterton and ordered to resume his seat but he shouted "This is an outrage!" as the debate was concluding.

The SNP's business spokesman had risen to protest as the exchanges came to a climax following a lengthy parliamentary battle in recent weeks.

He refused to sit down and proceeded to pick up the parliamentary mace and walk towards the door of the chamber.

He was stopped by the doorkeepers, who took the mace from him.

On his Facebook page, Mr Hendry defended his stance: "Westminster ministers will have the right to impose lower food, environmental and other devolved standards on Scotland, regardless of the view of Holyrood.

"This bill is the biggest assault on devolution in the history of the Scottish Parliament. It undermines devolved policy making, grabs spending powers and removes state aid from being a devolved responsibility.

"The Scottish Parliament refused to give this bill consent and it is outrageous that the UK government is once again ignoring the wishes of the people of Scotland."
