Aviemore's Grampian Road is not likely to reopen until late this afternoon after a huge tree fell onto the main street last night near the village centre.

The operation to remove the tree which topped down by the BP garage is due to get under way in the next 30 minutes.

A cherry-picker is to be brought onto the site and the giant tree will be removed in sections by chainsaw.

Workers at the site estimate that the task will take most of the working day.

The road is cordoned off in both directions after the incident which occurred at the height of Storm Corrie last night at around 8.30pm.

The location of the stricken tree means that there is no through road in Aviemore and traffic will have to divert via the A9.

As daylight arrived, it also was clear that a lampost had been brought down amongst the tree trunks and branches.

Workers are now on site as the operation gears up to remove the tree.

It is now the calm after the storm, but there is tree debris on other roads in the village including on the Aviemore centre brae.

Parts of the strath remain out of power.

Kingussie High School is closed today due to having no power or heating in the building. Work will be posted on Google Classroom for pupils.

Prelims scheduled for today will be rearranged.

The school has apologised for the inconvenience caused.
