An Aviemore couple have issued an urgent appeal for aid ahead of a convoy heading out to help the people of Lviv.

Alice Bailey and Rod Webster have been working with Tayside & Strathearn Help for Ukraine.

They have already gathered enough items at their home on Burnside Place from within the local area to take two full van loads to Errol airfield and one to Ukraine Highlands in Inverness.

The charity has contacted them today with a request for food which is urgently needed in Lviv in the west of the Ukraine which had been a safe haven but is now being targeted by Russian forces.

The city has also been inundated with Ukrainians seeking safety from the north, east and south of the country which have come under the heaviest attacks.

Alice told the Strathy a short time ago: "We have just had an urgent plea from Tayside & Strathearn Help for Ukraine for assistance as Lviv is rapidly running out of food. They have people on the front line telling them what is needed.

"There is a lorry leaving this Saturday for Lviv from Errol.

"The urgent plea is for donations of food, any food which can travel – but no glass. The situation is desperate."

The food donations can be delivered to 17 Burnside Place, Aviemore, PH22 1SG.

Alice said: "Ideally donations must be with us in Aviemore by this Thursday evening but early Friday up until 10am is possible as this is when I have to leave with the van. We have boxes.

"Donations will be packed and processed.

"They will leave this Saturday when there is a slot on the lorry. All the donations from the strath will be in Lviv at the contact centre by Tuesday – four days is the maximum but the aid could well be delivered sooner.

"This is the fastest way to get food to Ukraine at the moment."

They include:

• First Aid kits - dressings, sterile saline, bandages and general items;

• nappies and wet wipes;

• sleeping bags – new or good condition;

• roll mats and thermal mats;

• thermal foil blankets;

• tents;

• pouches of baby food and milk (no glass);

• warm socks, thermals, new underwear (no other clothing);

• paper plates/cups and camping plates/cups;

Lviv is the largest city in Western Ukraine and the sixth-largest city in the country with a population of 717,510.

The mayor Andriy Sadovyi said the number of refugees who have arrvied in the city is now more than 200,000, which is double previous expectations.
