A spokesman told the Strathy today: "The railway regrets if our operations may have inadvertently resulted in a fire that spread to neighbouring property.

"Our steam locomotives are fitted with equipment to minimise the possibility of incendive sparks escaping."

No fingers have been actually been pointed but there was no doubt about the speedy reaction after the alarm was raised around 3.15pm on Sunday afternoon.

Appliances were sent by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service from Aviemore, Grantown, Kingussie and Newtonmore as smoke billowed westwards with an area of scrub beside the steam railway line having been ignited.

There were no trains or travellers in the area as firefighters brought the incident under control in an hour and a half.

They were called off by HQ by 4.42 and were away from the area not long after 5pm.
