Newtonmore is bracing itself for nine months of disruption as a new mains sewerage system undergoes construction.

Work is set to start in a range of streets in the heart of the Badenoch village and the first phase will begin tomorrow (Monday).

Customer manager Clive Duncan, at Caledonia Water Alliance, explained: “Following our information event in October our project team were required to carry out further investigation works.

“As a result, this delayed the planned start of the works.

“The work involves the construction of new sewers in Balavil Brae, Golf Course Road, Main Street and Church Terrace and the team will move in for phase 1a at the Main Street and Golf Course Road (phase 3a).”

The construction will be done on a rolling programme, with the entire contract expected to take approximately nine months.

“We want to minimise disruption as much as possible,” Mr Duncan confirmed.

“During the work there will be various work in the roads along the route which will involve various traffic management including rolling road closures, with local diversions in place and temporary traffic lights to ensure the safety of both our workforce and members of the public.

“Please follow all signage. There will be some restrictions to vehicle access and parking during some sections of the works. Our contractors will speak to any customer affected by this. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all

times.”

The contractor is Pat Munro Ltd who are will do ‘all they can’ to keep disruption to a minimum.

The schedule is as follows

• Phase 1a, 1b and 1c: Main Street (17 weeks).

• Phase 2: Balavil Place (Church Terrace to Main St, about five weeks)

• Phase 3: Golf Course Road (22 weeeks)

• Phase 4: Church Terrace (13 weeks).

Local Highland councillor Russell Jones told the Strathy recently: “It’s good that Scottish Water has undertaken community engagement and I’m sure their contractors will be as accommodating as they can for local access.”

Caledonia Water Alliance will be carrying out the work which will cost in the region of £4m to address historical flooding events in the village’s high street.

The work involves laying around 650m of new sewer along Golf Course Road, Main Street and Church Terrace to Clune Terrace.

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “A number of residents in the area have previously been affected by sewer flooding and this improvement project will help reduce the risk of flooding in the future."
