Long-awaited remedial works to Kingussie's Ruthven Bridge are now set to start later this month.

Local councillor Russell Jones has confirmed that the vital upgrade will begin on April 24, with the road set to close to vehicular traffic for four weeks from May 2.

"Provision will be made to allow pedestrian, cyclists and dismounted equestrians pass over the bridge during the works," said Mr Jones.

The £220k contract covers the replacement of waterproofing and new sub-surface drainage.

Also the bridge will see new surfacing to revised vertical alignment and new expansion joints including new concrete ground beams, access regrading and plaque relocation.

A special plaque was put in place after the last major upgrade to the bridge a few years ago.

Story Contracting Ltd, of Blantyre won the contract when it went out to tender from Highland Council.

Members of the public will be asked to consider avoiding non-essential use of the access arrangements where possible: "This will help ensure site activities can progress smoothly and efficiently, allowing the road closure to be lifted as soon as possible."

It is expected that some site activities will be unable to proceed alongside any form of public access. On affected days access for non-motorised traffic will be restricted to two amnesties: 8am to 9am and 3pm to 4pm.
