A competition for the best of Scotland's schools skiers has been cancelled because of a lack of snow.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Schools Alpine Series announced: "It is with great disappointment that the SSSA committee has to confirm that this year's SSAS races are having to be cancelled at all mountain centres across the country due to lack of snow.

"Whilst colder weather and some precipitation is forecast for the next few days, given many of the race pistes are currently green, mountain staff have confirmed that it is unlikely to be enough to allow a suitable base to be established to support racing next week.

"It has been a very disappointing season for us all but we are far from done yet so rest assured that the SSSA committee will be looking at any opportunities to at least deliver some schools racing before the season ends.

"Fingers crossed for something."

The race events are held at mountain ski centres around Scotland and comprises five regional primary and secondary school qualifying ski races held at Nevis, Glencoe, Glenshee, Cairngorm and the Lecht.

The finals had been planned this season at Glenshee.

All events are timed combi, slalom or giant slalom races in real alpine conditions and winners from each regional qualifier event can then progress onto the SSSA Alpine Championship finals held in March

The Cairngorms region qualifier had been due to be hosted this Friday at the Lecht.

The competition traditionally attracts a large contingent of racers from primary schools and the two secondary schools in the strath.
