-15C recorded in part of the Highlands as mercury plunges

Highland residents were waking up to what is likely to have been the coldest night of the winter so far after the mercury plummeted as low as -15C early on Saturday morning.

Highlands and Islands Weather, which has weather stations dotted all across the region and can be found on Facebook, posted an update shortly before 7am to reveal that thermometers had recorded -15C at Achnahannet near Carrbridge overnight.

The frigid temperature comes amid an active yellow weather warning for snow and ice in some parts of the Highlands. The alert, issued by the Met Office, remains in force until late morning - although with further baltic chills expected into Sunday and early next week, further alerts seem likely.

News of this morning's frigid -15C in the Cairngorms National Park sparked a flurry of responses from residents all across the Highlands, eager to share the temperatures where they live.

Barry Folan said: "A relatively balmy -11.8 outside Kingussie at 7am."

Sadie-Michaela Harris joked: "Ooooh la la, double socks day!! -6.8C in Strathgarve, it was a wee bit colder during the earlier hours."

Agnes MacDonald added: "-6 in Dingwall, a fresh morning for a brisk walk."

Simon Venters, meanwhile, said: "Minus 8.2 in Ardgay just now."

Elsewhere, Kevin Findlater said it was showing as -7C in Forres, while Louise S Sutherland shared: "-5 in Golspie at the moment" shortly before 7.15am.

The low temperatures also sparked a few humourous remarks, with Tomas Wesolowski joking: "Nae midges then!" and Steven Green adding: "Now that's nippy."
