Highland motorists warned of very snowy scenes on A9 at Drumochter; Bear Scotland also highlighted similar issues on parts of the A82

MOTORISTS have been urged to take care on two of the region’s main trunk roads, amid continuing wintry conditions on higher routes.
Bear Scotland, which maintains and grits the Highlands’ trunk roads, is warning of snowy conditions on the A9 at Drumochter, and also at the A82 in Glencoe at Altnafeadh.
“We still have 29 gritters out working hard making sure trunk roads across the north-west of Scotland remain safe,” they added. “Please drive to conditions and take care if out.”
The plea came as amber and yellow weather warnings for snow and ice remained in place in the Highlands on Thursday morning.
The amber alert, which is centred on Badenoch & Strathspey and other Cairngorm areas, ends at 10am.
But the yellow alert, which covers most inland Highland areas, is expected to remain in place until 9pm tonight.
And a further yellow warning has been issued for snow and ice on Saturday.
Commenting on Saturday’s warning, which runs from 3am to 9pm, a Met Office spokesman said: “An area of rain pushing eastwards is expected to turn snow in places as it encounters colder air across Scotland and parts of northern and eastern England.
“At first the main hazard may be rain falling onto frozen surfaces leading to ice, especially on higher level routes. However snow becomes more likely during the early morning.
“Heavier snowfall is more likely above 200m in Scotland and northern England, where 5-10cm of snow may accumulate, possibly 20cm on highest routes. At lower levels and further south, two to five centimetres of snow may accumulate in places, but the situation is finely balanced, with the possibility that most lower-lying areas, especially in the east, will see rain or sleet rather than snow.”
