Double delight for Badenoch and Strathspey at the Youth Olympics!
It’s been a golden day for Strathspey at the Youth Olympics in Georgia.
And the event has also set Badenoch on the road to stardom as well.
Freestyle snowboarder Emily Rothney will bring home the top medal of her event and slalom skier Tia Freshwater has confirmed her place in the highest echelons of her discipline.
“It’s another gold medal for Team GB as Emily Rothney claims first place with her final run!” the team posted this afternoon.
“After not sticking her landing on the second run, it all came down to the last attempt and Rothney secured a massive 83 points, which took her total to 156.75.”
“I’m still on the ceiling,” said breathless grandmother Anne Dickson at her home in Carrbridge. “She kept us waiting to her very last run!”
At the family home in the village. Mum Kerrie said: “We were all on the edge of our seats this morning.
“But what a finish! We are all delighted for Emily.”
The Strathy hopes to have a word with the gold medallist later today.
With a final ranking on 1 Emily’s medal was secured on 156.75 points, compared with her closest rivals:
2 Aono Pordie Okinawa (France) 149.50
3 Janina Walz (Germany) 140.50
Meanwhile at Loch Insh Sailing School, there was “massive congratulations to skier Tia Freshwater for an incredible performance in her favourite discipline, securing a strong 18th place at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Georgia!
“With a world ranking of 46 in slalom for her age, that’s a personal best for sure!”
Her father Andrew - instructor and mentor - told the Strathy: “A bit better on the final day, with a cheeky wee 18th! She was also 9th out of the 16-year-old age group, which is so important as that demonstrates she is top 10 on a world stage.”
We were unable to talk with meanwhile as she had taken to her bed.
“She’s sick with the cold,” said Dad.
