Appeal for CCTV evidence of Grantown vandals after latest park attack
Anger is growing in Grantown at the continued vandalism at a park which only two years ago was transformed at a cost of nearly £100,000.
“So much work and fund raising went into upgrading Dulaig Park,” Grantown Grapevine posted after the latest attack on Wednesday July 2, “yet it’s slowly being wrecked.”
The problem is getting worse, confirmed the Strathspey capital’s Facebook voice.
“Between the hours off 6.30 and 10:30 this morning someone helped themselves to the gate.
“If anyone saw anything suspicious, or noticed someone with a heavy gate this morning around the Dulaig park area, then please contact Police Scotland.
“Any household with door cameras to cctv please check.
“This is unbelievable. It’s pure vandalism, ripping this gate off its post.”
It was in April two years ago that the Highland Council-owned park enjoyed a community open day, with the specially-convened Dulaig Park Renovation group thanking everyone for raising over £99,000 for improvements to their vital greenspace.
Residents young and old, enjoyed active games with the Care and Learning Alliance while High Life Highland laid on a football tournament. Aviemore Bikes was on hand to let people try an e-bike before signing up to their free six-week hire scheme
The then local MP Drew Hendry enjoyed helping residents plant wildlife friendly plants such as buddleia, thyme and ivy.
He said at the time: “Days like this really do showcase the best of our communities. A day for all to enjoy, it was wonderful to see locals come together for fun and games, as well as to learn about important initiatives such as conservation and active travel.
“The renovation would not have been possible without all the fundraising initiatives, of which there have been many.”
Main funders included Highland Council (£28,000) the Berry Burn Windfarm (£19,000) and the National Lottery’s Community Fund (£6,075).
But the park has occasionally been plagued by vandals ever since.
