Holiday apartment block proposed for centre of Aviemore

The principle of building a potentially multi-storey block of holiday apartments in the heart of Aviemore will be considered later this week.

Members of the Cairngorms National Park Authority's planning committee are being recommended by their planners to approve the application by the Macdonald Aviemore Resort owners despite concerns about the building's height.

The single block comprising 18 self-catering two-bedroom holiday units is proposed in an elevated position on a 0.43 hectare site on the resort's land to the rear of the Cairngorm Hotel.

The original submission was for 22 apartments.

An earlier iteration of the proposal was for a development of five storeys but this latest application is for planning permission in principle and there are no indication of the height of the building.

The scale and massing of the apartment block would need to be approved by CNPA planners at a later stage as part of Approval of Matters Specified in Conditions.

CNPA planning officer Stephanie Wade states in her report: "Aviemore Community Council note their preference to see such sites used for affordable housing...

"They maintain their objection the scheme due to the potential scale and nature of the development and find it hard to envisage how the development would be built without having an unacceptable height.

"They recommend that should permission be granted any development should be no more than two storeys high with a maximum of 12 units."

Committee members will determine the acceptability of the principle of holiday letting units on the site when they meet in Grantown on Friday.
