‘Mr Newtonmore Games’ will hand on the torch on Saturday

After four magnificent decades, ‘Mr Newtonmore Games’ is handing on the torch.

On Saturday the Badenoch village’s Highland gathering takes place on the Eilan at the southern end, but for the first time since anyone can remember it won’t be Tom Robertson at the helm.

Tom has finally passed the baton on, and stepped down from his pivotal role as the games committee chair.

“Tom has done an incredible job for over four decades, making sure that the Newtonmore Games continued to be one of the best in Scotland,” acknowledged chieftain Angus Macpherson.

A new trophy has been created in Tom’s name for the iconic Creag Dhubh Hill race as a mark of respect and gratitude.

Committee member Rod Frazer told us: “After so many years organising the smooth running of the games, it seemed only appropriate to come up with a lasting legacy for Tom, so that every year Tom’s invaluable contribution will be commemorated, by the handing over of his trophy to to fastest female athlete in the hill race.

“I’m very happy to report that there has been a great response from local volunteers and committee members to take over the many different tasks that Tom had tirelessly performed in previous years.

“This Games promises to be as always a great day out for all the family, either as spectators or competitors in the many varied events. We look forward to welcoming both locals and visitors from all over the world on Saturday ”.

The games begins from 12.30 on the Eilan, with the pipe band march through the village at 1pm.
