A £2 million project to refurbish the swimming pool at the Craig MacLean Sports Centre has fallen behind schedule after asbestos was discovered in the facility, it has emerged.

The pool was expected to be closed for nine months when the doors shut at the end of August, last year.

The major work includes the remodelling of the changing village area and installing a new swimming pool ‘tank or shell’ and water treatment plant.

Roof coverings to the existing pool and adjacent fitness hall are being replaced, including the installation of new roof lights over the pool.

A spokeswoman for operators High Life Highland said: "The programme is progressing well having experienced a short delay in October, last year, as a result of asbestos removal.

"The latest information we have available is that the swimming pool should reopen in July, later this year."

Once complete, the pool will be deck level which will meet the needs of swimming clubs and lessons.

It will be more accessible with an improved disabled hoist system.

High Life Highland cardholders have been able to swim at the Macdonald Highland Resort pool whilst the refurbishment has been on-going

The £2.175 million contract to carry out the pool redevelopment is being delivered by Morrison Construction (Highland).
