Fun day out turns out to be anything but for Carrbridge fundraisers

The Run for Life at Inverness ran into trouble for a courageous threesome from Carrbridge.

Yasmin Harrower was competing along with her mother, Caroline, who is battling a brain tumour and took part in her motorized scooter.

Joining them was the family's Matlese terrier Angel. They were amongst a huge crowd held up by poor route planning for Sunday's popular fundraiser.

"It became a nightmare in the end," said Yasmin.

Part of the route turned out to be blocked off, and with more than 2,000 women taking part on the 5km challenge the closure of a bridge at Ness Islands caused a bottleneck which took the smile out of the event.

"We’d started in such good spirits" said Yasmin, "and a wait of ten minutes or so we could have put up with, obviously. But an hour! It just got worse and worse and people were so pushy, the fun really went out of it for us.

"By the time we got to the finish line we were so late that most people had just packed up and left. There was no atmosphere and it’s left us wondering about doing it again. Certainly not on that route!"

Yasmin had run the race last year to raise money for cancer relief. Her mother had intended to join in as well, but had had to undergo brain surgery at the time.

This year, still battling cancer, she had been determined to show solidarity for the cause and had turned out on the scooter.

She completed the course and her daughter said: "I’m so, so proud of her! And we’re so grateful to all those who have supported us. The money is coming in here at the shop (Animal Ark, in Grantown’s High Street) and online at www.justgiving.com/yasminharrower."

But Yasmin (21) confessed: "Angel did finish the race but she did cheat a bit here are there – mum gave her the occasional lift!"
