The Cairngorms National Park Authority's board meeting has been called off today as a mark of respect to the Queen.

The hybrid meeting at the CNPA's headquarters in Grantown and online had been due to start at 10am.

Xander McDade, Cairngorms National Park Authority board convener, paid tribute to Her Majesty who, of course, had strong connections with the region through her home at Balmoral.

Mr McDade said: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Her Majesty The Queen at Balmoral, and we wish to extend our sincerest sympathies to The Royal Family at this difficult time.

"Her Majesty had a very special connection to the people and nature of the Cairngorms National Park with her long association to Royal Deeside.

"Her presence at Balmoral each summer will be missed and her loss will be keenly felt by everyone here, as it will across Scotland, the UK and the rest of the world.”

No new date has been given for the meeting. Members were due to elect a new deputy convener as part of the business after Carolyn Caddick had to stand down.

She was appointed as a local government representative on the board and she did not seek re-election at May's Highland Council election.

The position of CNPA deputy convener becomes vacant with effect from October 1.

The board was also due to agree a change in timetabling of elections to senior board positions in the future and also on job sharing these roles.
