Substitutes Matthew Sloss and Joe Coyle combined to send Newtonmore into the Artemis Macaulay Cup quarter-finals after beating Beauly 1-0 in their first round tie at The Eilan on Saturday.

‘More’s Drew MacDonald missed out with an ankle injury on Saturday but there was a start for Aarron MacBean.

The Blue and Whites enjoyed the better of the first half but Beauly keeper Lee Dunbar made a number of outstanding saves, a pattern that continued into the second half.

‘More kept pressing and got their reward 11 minutes from time when Matthew Sloss played the ball into the danger-area from the left and Joe Coyle still had plenty to do but he showed great movement and composure as he took a lovely touch to skip by a defender before pushing the ball by the keeper.

‘More manager Peter Ross said: “We had all the first half pressure and played good shinty but their keeper Lee Dunbar was exceptional with three great saves in the first half and a couple in the second.

“We didn’t have a bad player, and Joe Coyle scored a fantastic goal and showed that he’s that yard ahead of many players.

“Fair play to Beauly as they defended well and this is a team that took Kingussie to penalties not that long ago.

“I also thought referee Jamie MacPherson gave possibly one of the best displays I’ve seen over recent years.

“He was very clear; he kept up with play and played advantage and there were no bookings.”

The win means Newtonmore now host Skye in the Artemis Macaulay Cup quarter-finals, scheduled for Saturday 21 June.

They also face Skye in the Mowi Premiership on Saturday, this time in Portree.
