The Highland Welfare Cup comes to the strath this Sunday with three of the local Strathspey and Badenoch Welfare Football Association sides taking part.

Kingussie, Boat of Garten Ospreys and Aviemore Thistle will be looking to do one better than Grantown FC’s semi-final appearance last season as they enter the opening round.

The Highland Cup is the Scottish Welfare FA’s second most prestigious trophy after the Scottish Cup itself, so to have three local sides in the competition is a real feather in the cap for the SBWFA.

For Kingussie, it’s a clash of the geographical extremes as the furthest west side hosts Longside Thistle at Carrbridge.

Thistle hail from the Peterhead area and participate in the North East Welfare FA’s League 2: they’re presently in ninth spot.

Also drawn at home is Aviemore Thistle who will face-down Burghead United of the Moray & District Welfare FA.

This is a daunting encounter for Campbell Whyte’s side as Burghead won their Premier Division title this season, as well as being the reigning Highland Cup holders.

The Ospreys will take on the gloriously named Elizabethan Link Up who hail from Fraserburgh in the North East Welfare.

“The Lizzie” as they’re known presently sit second in the association’s Division 2.

Due to a function being held in the Boat of Garten Community Centre, this game will be played on Spey Valley Utd’s Cromdale Park.

Kick off for all three games is at 2pm.
