’More return to top of the table

NEWTONMORE took advantage of Kyles Athletic’s fixture in the Camanachd Cup to make up their game in hand.

Their 2-0 victory on Saturday returned them once again to the top of the Premier League pile, on goal difference over Kyles.

The Blue and Whites were away at one-time challengers Kinlochshiel, who have fallen away in recent weeks.

The home side was not able to halt the slide as the powerful ’More side ground out a solid second-half victory with goals from John Mackenzie, in the 50th minute, and one from Danny MacRae just two minutes from time.

Challengers Lovat kept up the pressure in third spot with a 2-1 victory at Bute.

However, they will be disappointed not to have taken advantage of the relative weakness of the islanders’ side with more goals.

It was Bute who opened the scoring through Ali Carmichael in the 16th minute.

Lovat had to wait until two minutes before the turn for Owen Ferguson to level, then Greg Matheson clinched the winner just a minute into the second period, ensuring a nervous rest of the second half.

Meanwhile, Kingussie continued their recent good form with a 4-0 win over Kilmallie at Canal Park.

Barrie Dallas grabbed the opener in just five minutes, then Ronald Ross netted in 16 minutes to give the visitors a 2-0 half-time advantage.

An hour into the game, it was Ross again who made it 3-0, then Rory Borthwick added the fourth in the 77th minute to keep Kingussie in a solid fourth place in the league.

They are now two points clear of Fort William, having played one game fewer than the Garrison side, and two fewer than ’Shiel.
