Late blow for Kingussie in battle at Dell with premiership title rivals Fort William
A late Lachie Shaw goal meant Kingussie had to settle for a share of the points following a 2-2 draw with Fort William in their Mowi Premiership top of the table clash at The Dell on Saturday.
Fort William came into the match in third place, a point behind leaders Kingussie but with a game in hand.
Rory MacKeachan and Ruaridh Anderson were added to a Kingussie absentee list which already included Lee Bain, Zander Michie and Liam Borthwick but Calum Grant returned.
Lachie Shaw gave the visitors an eight-minute lead but Roddy Young equalised on 23 minutes, crashing the ball home from wide on the right following Toby Thain’s short free-hit.
Kingussie thought they hd won it with eight minutes remaining when substitute Michael Slimon scored from wide on the right but four minutes into stoppage time, Lachie Shaw turned home Victor Smith’s low pass from the left to earn a point.
There was still time for Fort William to break forward from the restart and the visitors claimed for a foul when Lachie Shaw went down but referee Des McNulty was not interested.
Kingussie boss Iain Borthwick said: “I just can’t quite believe it. Their first goal came from a bad clearance which went straight to Fort player and then, “bang” in the last couple of minutes.”
“We had a lot of play but didn’t play good shinty.
“Our forwards didn’t get going and didn’t pressure their keeper at all. That said, considering the players we were missing, I thought we did well enough.”
Kingussie are in WM Donald MacTavish Cup quarter-final action this weekend when they host Skye.
