Kingussie’s first team took to the field for the first time this season and they made a winning start as they defeated Oban Camanachd 3-1 in a pre-season friendly at Mossfield.

With the new season just over a week away, Kingussie manager Iain Borthwick was delighted with Saturday’s display.

He said: “I’m really pleased with that, especially with the young boys.

“Not having Rory McGregor, Rory MacKeachan, Liam Borthwick, Ruaridh Anderson and Savio Genini left a huge gap in our side but the youngsters who came in did really well.

“Oban probably had more possession over the 90 minutes and Hayden Taylor Ramsay had a fine game in goal with some tidy clearances in the first half and some good saves with his hand and feet after the restart.”

Roddy Young scored twice in the first half and any hopes the Oban side had of getting back into the game were squashed when Dylan Borthwick gave the Kings a comfortable three-goal cushion with a good finish just moments after the restart.

There was some consolation for the home side when skipper Daniel MacVicar took a touch and finished into the corner of the goal with around 20 minutes remaining to make the final score 3-1.

Borthwick singled out Young’s contribution.

“Roddy Young was superb,” he said. “He’s really getting back into the grove after his injury.

“If this game had been a few weeks further down the line, when he will be really firing on all cylinders, I’m sure he’d have scored even more goals.

“Dylan also took his goal well and that’s him off the mark too.”

A much-changed Kingussie started Sam Thain in defence with Cameron Bremner at buckshee back. Somhairle Fraser, Iain Fraser and George Taylor Ramsay were across the midfield with Eoin Baikie opening in attack.

Youngsters Macleod Dawson and Toby Than joined veteran Lee Bain on the bench.

Boss Borthwick said: “Lee Bain came on at centre when we had a bit of a half-time reshuffle.

“He’s not trained that much of late, so we eased him in. It was always a worry on such a cold day that there could be one or two pulled muscles but everyone’s fine and I’m pleased about that.

“Macleod Dawson got the last 20 minutes with Toby Thain coming on for the last 10 minutes and they are both ones for the future.”

Oban Camanachd were missing both Daniel Madej and Malcolm Clark and their assistant manager Iain MacMillan added: “Kingussie took their chances in the match.

“This is our only preseason game as we don’t want to risk injuries. Kingussie got in touch for this friendly, and we only took it on as you know you’ll always get a good, clean game against them and we also knew we’d be tested.”

Borthwick also took time to reflect on James Falconer’s unavailability this term, saying: “James has suffered a lot of injuries over recent seasons and missed a big chunk of last year.

“There’s no doubt he will be a loss, but we have Roddy Young back, and we have a big squad with other options in attack such as switching Thomas Borthwick and Lee Bain.

“We’ll leave the door open for James though and if he finds he’s missing the game then he’s welcome back.”

Meantime, Kingussie’s Liam Borthwick has had an operation on an injured hand but is likely to miss the first two months of the shinty season.
