Kingussie colts aiming for a league and cup double at the weekend

Kingussie’s second team is aiming to add the HIS Sutherland Cup this weekend to their North 2 league title.

Kingussie seconds will be trying to claim a rare feat this weekend when they attempt to get their hands on the HIS Sutherland Cup as a North Division 2 team.

The title is already in the bag so now there is just the small matter of getting the better of their Skye Camanachd counterparts at Blairbeg on Saturday.

Kingussie co-manager John Gibson said: “The players have done very well this season, and we’ve pretty much had two teams, one for the league with another for the cup ties.

“The cups are luxury but we knew with the players available we had a good chance of reaching the finals.

“The league team was much younger and great experience for the youngsters.

“Over the season, we’ve been able to use one or two of the more experienced players from the likes of Paul Gow, Lee Bain, Fraser Munro, James Hutchison and Louis Munro and they have helped the younger ones develop so much.”

Much of Kingussie’s team news for the final centres around Roddy Young and Louis Munro.

Gibson explained: “We still have some decisions to make. Louis Munro is a doubt and had to have a wire inserted to his broken thumb.

“We’ll give him every opportunity to play though so it will be a last-minute decision on him.

“We’ll need to see if Roddy is needed for the first team who play earlier in the day. If Louis doesn’t make it, I hope we’ll see more of Roddy, put it that way.

“This will be a first major final for most of the boys so we’ll travel by bus and want them to have the full cup final experience.”

The Kings were dealt a late blow with news that promising youngster Rory Munro suffered a broken wrist after the 15-year-old was hit by the ball from point blank range in an under-17 match.

A young Kingussie side drew 2-2 against a more experienced Lochaber side at Spean Bridge in their last outing to take the title.

Lochaber had a strong spine to their side whilst Kingussie had only two players aged over 20-years.

The game included a peach of an opening goal from Toby Thain.

Rory Munro’s shot from distance was saved but Toby Thain, on the run, hit the dropping ball first time and it flew by the helpless keeper.

It was a 16-game league campaign following which the Kings secured their immediate return to North with 13 victories, two draws and only one defeat.

Kevin Thain, a man who knows more than a thing or two about winning trophies for Kingussie, was present in his role as Camanachd Association competitions director as the Mowi North Division 2 trophy was presented to Kingussie skipper Sam Thain.

Skye will be smarting from a 5-0 defeat to Newtonmore in the Strathdearn Cup final but they beat Kinlochshiel 3-0 in their second team derby at Rèaraig last Friday evening.

Archie Millar scored all the goals but is ineligible for the final as he has played more than four times for the senior side.

Skye will check on Shockie MacLennan’s fitness ahead of the final, but Ian MacPherson remains out with a leg break. Jordan Murchison’s recent return to the fold has boosted their attacking options.

Throw up is at 3pm and Lachie Wood is the match referee.
