THE 11th Grantown Try Tri on Sunday produced some terrific performances from 146 competitors ranging in age from 9 to those in their sixties.

The event consists of a 300 metre swim in Grantown swimming pool, a 17km bike ride around the Braes and a 4.5km run through Anagach Woods.

The title was won by 19-year-old John Rutledge from Nethy Bridge in a time of 51 minutes 40 seconds.

It was a real family affair for John as his sister, Beth, and brother, Steven, also took part in the individual event while his mum, Cath, and dad, Dave, and other sister, Emma, took part in the team event.

John was closely followed home by 16-year-old Roddy Horne in a time of 52 minutes 29 seconds, with veteran David Horne (no relation), who had been on the reserve list, third in a time of 53 minutes and two seconds.

The first men’s super veteran was Gary Horne who finished in a time of 57 minutes 58 seconds, while Alastair Bulcraig won the vintage event in a time of one hour 13 minutes and one second.

The first woman home was Penny Phillips in a time of one hour, two minutes and 24 seconds.

The women’s super veteran was Patricia Reid in a time of one hour 10 minutes and 50 seconds, while the vintage women’s winner was Anne Docherty, who completed the course in one hour 18 minutes and 16 seconds.

Roddy Horne took top spot in the boys junior 1 category and Ailsa Hepburn was first in the girls section while local youngsters Alex Philip and Beth Rutledge were top in their age categories.

Lauren’s Gang from Grantown won the team event in a time of one hour and 57 seconds. The best junior male team was Team Cooke from Grantown, who finished in one hour seven minutes and eight seconds.

The Grantown Try Tri chairwoman Rebecca Reid said: "We had a great race in the sunshine, with the number of teams and entrants showing just how popular the sport of triathlon has become.

"I would like to thank all our volunteers and event organiser David Muir for their efforts, as well as our sponsors Masson Cairns and BaseCamp Bikes."

Entries for next year’s event open at the beginning of April.

Meanwhile Grantown’s first junior Try Tri was held on Saturday and was judged a great success, with 60 children aged from seven to 12 taking part. The event was organised by Craig MacLean Leisure Centre supervisers Fraser Tulloch and Ali Page.
